    Mauritius provides freedom of press and expression as it is protected in the 1968 constitution and practically respected by the government in 2007. There are a few laws concerning penalties for libel but they are not used in practise. A law to guarantee access to public information is still missing.

    Mauritius is considered a free country by the Freedom House Index 2011. Problems include abuse of suspects and detainees by security forces, prison overcrowding, corruption, violence and discrimination against women and abuse and exploitation of children.
