    Zambia has made improvements concerning their conditions of press freedom in the past years but legal harassment and physical intimidation still occur regularly. Libel and defamation are criminal offenses in Zambia and lead to penalties.
  • Human Rights Record
    Zambia is ranked a partly free country with a downwards trend by the Freedom House Index of 2011 due to political violence against opposition members and civil society groups. Human rights problems the country has to deal with include unlawful killings, torture and abuse of prisoners, impunity of authorities, poor prison conditions, arbitrary arrests and violence and discrimination against women. Freedom of speech, press, assembly and association is restricted by government authorities. Further problems are child abuse, trafficking in persons and child labour.
